Last weekend, the Spokane Shock made history.
For the first time in franchise history, the Shock held an open player tryout outside the state of Washington. By all accounts, the tryout was a success and it will be the first of many in the years to come.
The first of three open tryouts that will be held before the start of the 2010 season was held in Los Angeles, California at Occidental College.
With over 75 participants Head Coach Rob Keefe said he was impressed not only by the number of participants, but also by their abilities.
“I was pleasantly surprised by the talent level,” Keefe explained. “Nearly every level of football was represented. Some players had NFL experience, others had af2 experience, and all of them had collegiate experience.”
The participants came from Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada and even Japan.
“There are a lot of talented players out there,” Keefe explained. “I want to find that diamond in the rough. If we are going to contend for a championship, I need to be sure that we have the best players on the field – no matter where they are from.”
Over the next several weeks, Keefe and his staff will study film from the tryout, before deciding which athletes will be invited to training camp.
“We were really impressed with the players at the tryout and we have some tough decisions over the next few weeks,” Keefe explained.
Keefe and his coaching staff will hold an additional tryout in Pullman at Washington State University and another in Atlanta at Georgia State University.
“We will bring some of the guys from L.A. workout to camp. But before we make any offers, I want to see what kind of talent we will find in Atlanta and Pullman first.”
Sounds like Keefe and his staff have some diamonds to polish before the start of 2010 season on April 2nd.
