2006 – The number alone sends shivers up and down Shock fans. And now the memories of that season have been etched in af2 history, as the third greatest team of all-time. In honor of the af2’s 10th anniversary the league has compiled a series of all -time list’s that includes today’s latest edition, the top-10 teams of all-time.
In the (2006) inaugural season of the Spokane Shock, nobody expected much; let alone an ArenaCup Championship. In fact, for Head Coach Chris Siegfried he wasn’t sure that his team had a “shot” at the Title until the season was half over.
“We made a few key midseason acquisitions – OL Ed Ta’amu, QB Kyle Rowley, and DB Isaiah Trufant – and I think that adding those key components made the difference for us,” Siegfried explained. “There was a point in time where I sat down with the Coaching staff and I said ‘you know guys, we have a shot at making a run at this thing.’”
After an improbable play-off run (that included the sixth greatest game of all-time against Bakersfield), the Siegfried-led Shock found themselves with a ticket to Puerto Rico playing for the ArenaCup Championship.
“When we went down to Puerto Rico we got off the plane, went to dinner and then went to practice. We were very business-like and focused,” Siegfried explained. “I stayed focused up until about a minute to go in the game and I know that our guys were focused for the game. That is something that is hard to coach.”
That focus netted the Shock a 57-34 victory over the Green Bay Blizzard and an ArenaCup Championship.
“I don’t think there was any one individual player that was dominant,” Siegfried continued. “There were some great, great players on that team but it was how they played collectively that was really special. We won a lot of ugly games early in the season and it wasn’t until Bakersfield embarrassed us that we really took a look in the mirror and started playing good football.
That was a special thing we had. It’s always going to be a special, no matter what happens the rest of my career. “
Siegfried and Rowley will return to Spokane on March 18th as the Shock host the Arkansas Twisters on Spokane Tribe Field at the Spokane Arena.
#9 2008 Spokane Shock
There is no doubt that football is a team sport and fans of the 2008 Spokane Shock gained a first-hand understanding of that fact last season.
After a near perfect regular season (15-1), the Shock players had formed a special bond that went beyond a typical football team, according to Head Coach Adam Shackleford.
“Coming out of training camp, we knew that we were going to have a good football team. I really think the family atmosphere that we had (last year) is unique to pro football. When we you win the games we won, and sometimes the way we won them, that’s going to bring a group of young men together. “
After posting a franchise-best regular season record, the Shock entered into the playoffs as the top seed. One by one the Shock picked off their playoff opponents and punched a ticket with destiny for the 2009 ArenaCup. As the top seed in the playoffs, the Shock earned the right to host the Tennessee Valley Vipers for the Championship in front of an Arena Cup record-crowd (10,662).
In a game that was named the greatest of all-time, the Shock came up one point short in a heart-breaking defeat at the hands of the Vipers, who were ranked 10th all-time among af2 teams.
After the game, Shackelford couldn’t hide his disappointment but was already focusing on the 2009 season.
“We knew we had to play well to beat them,” Shackleford explained after the game. “Tennessee Valley have been road warriors all year – they have won in some tough places. We knew we had to play well but we didn’t play well enough to win; my hats off to Tennessee Valley.”
We’ve proven that we have a model and a philosophy that works. When you win 18-games, you are not doing the wrong things. We just need to go back, take some well-deserved time off, and get back to work.”
No matter the results of that game, the fact remains that the Shock posted a franchise-best record (15-1) and a franchise-best overall record (18-2). They won their third straight Divisional Title, their second Conference Championship and their second ArenaCup appearance in only their third season.
As the ninth best team in af2 history, the Spokane Shock have secured a name for themselves not only in the league’s record book but also in the heart’s of Shock fans everywhere.
